Season of Peace

img_1197

There used to be a picturesque derelict barn on the old Nomura farm in Port Townsend. Some years ago a winter windstorm blew it down. After it was gone, the intersection at San Juan and Discovery seemed empty. One day, Mr. Nomura (who even in advanced age can recite the first 300 digits of Pi, then repeat them backwards, and I know because I’ve heard him) got out his tractor and created an enormous peace symbol. It meant a lot to many people, including me. There have been many photographs taken of it, including some with the peace symbol filled with protesters against the war in Iraq. This year, it is filled with daffodils.
