Kite Season

Marcia Lewton testing the wind

Marcia Lewton testing the wind

Although I’m usually tempted in February, I do try to wait until March–offical kite-flying season–before I test the wind. Even then, we have strong gusts from the south that make all but the sturdiest kites unmanageable.

Today, the wind was  still too gusty, but I just couldn’t help myself. And it is March, just.

Marcia and I drove to North Beach and walked in the meadow beside the sea. I spent a lot of time re-launching the kite after nosedives, but it was good exercise and good fun.

Later this month, Port Townsend will host the 27th Annual Kitemakers’ Conference at Fort Worden. I’ve never actually attended the workshops, but I do like to go out to the Parade Ground at Fort Worden to see what they’ve got up in the air.

  1. Great photo of a kite and a woman trying to master it. I’m enjoying your blog.

  2. I love this photo too! In fact, I’d also like to see it reversed….tiny Marcia, big butterfly. I bet you could manage it. : ) And I, too, am enjoying your blog. Glad Mena told me about it!
