Making Yourself At Home for the Holidays

rv-santa1I stopped to say hello to Ed Schaeffer today as he adjusted the colored lights and artificial boughs surrounding his illuminated Santa Claus. It wasn’t an unusual holiday display, except for the fact that St. Nick was lashed to the bumper of his RV. Mr. Schaeffer invited me into his snug and immaculate home on wheels to tell me a little about his display. “I’m thinking about adding twelve of those lighted deer to look like they are pulling the rig,” he said, “but it would be a lot of extra money.”

It wasn’t the first time his holiday decorations were noticed. He proudly shared a clipping from the Peninsula Daily News dated from a previous year, when he had a Christmas tree outside of his RV. I’m sorry I missed it. I’ll be sure to look for him at Point Hudson next year.

Christmas and Thanksgiving come with a lot of pressure to spend the holidays at home with family. That isn’t possible for all of us every year. For some of us, never. Mr. Schaeffer is doing something I admire: making himself at home for the holidays wherever he happens to be.
